lunedì 30 aprile 2012MALIGNANT CHRIST (english version)Information Author: Mourning Translation: Dope Fiend Line Up Brandon Von - All the instruments I have the pleasure to talk with Brandon Von, mastermind of Malignant Christ. Welcome to Aristocrazia, how are you? I’m doing great, the album is doing pretty well and we couldn’t be happier! Let's begin by introducing your creature, how did the band born, by whom it is composed and what are the musical and ideological points of reference that you follow to provide it a clear direction? I started Malignant Christ in January of 2007 with some friends. Right now the band is just me and I am the only one who performed on the CD although former bassist and vocalist Joey Richesin wrote some of the lyrics on the album. Malignant’s goal since day one has been to deliver true death metal with no trendy bullshit and make the sickest music possible. Malignant Christ is my life and my life-force, I would die without it. Malignant Christ is what allows me to wake up every day and function normally. I noticed there was a lot of musicians coming and going in the ranks of Malignant Christ, it is difficult to maintain a stable formation? Extremely, we live in the bible belt of the United States and not many people here are into extreme music. Most people are into either stuff like Whitechapel and Suicide Silence which sucks or gay Pantera worship crap. "Forever In Chaos" is your child, no other was put his hand within the compositional and instrumental field, as was working alone on the album? What are the difficulties or facilities in choosing to pursue a solo-project? Actually, former bassist and vocalist Joey Richesin wrote the lyrics for "Shrine Of The Dismembered" But I did do all of the riffs and arrangements and most of the lyrics so yes you would be sort of correct on that. In a lot of ways it’s easier working alone because there is no other input but my own so therefore the album can be my vision of perfect for said project. On the other hand the fact that it’s just me is somewhat draining financially. I don’t view us as a solo project at all because I intend to find more members and bring in people. From now on I’ll probably be writing everything but aside from that I’d rather have people in Malignant Christ other than just me. I really liked the album, is retro, blasphemous, full of atmospheres and negative feelings that converge within the pieces. How was your song born? And how do you choose the more suitable lyric? Well we’re mostly influenced by classic stuff like Immolation, Morbid Angel, Sinister, Incantation, Killing Addiction, Atrocity, (old) Gorguts, etc... the lyrics are fiction horror stories but most definitely inspired by real life and things we have experienced or have good knowledge of. Song kind of come about in a weird way in that I tab them first on my computer and then learn how to play them and make changes that way. A lot of people jam stuff out but I don’t really work that way, I feel like when I do that that I don’t get all of the possibilities into it. I feel like if I can listen to the songs back then I don’t waste time continually relearning riffs. Usually it takes me a lot long to write stuff than it does to learn it for that reason. As for writing lyrics I usually go through several drafts of my lyrics before I am satisfied with them. How much you think is stronger today the anti-religious movement? Do you think the man is finally fighting back to the most famous opioid? To be honest with you I don’t really view myself as anti-religious. Malignant Christ is really a satanic band per-say. In America everything seems to me at least to be getting more Christianized. To me religion itself isn’t evil as in the belief in a God and justice and an afterlife, it’s how people pervert and mutilate and twist to make it seem like such a god has given them personally the right and authority to do whatever they want. Those people to me are truly vile and should be extinguished. When we talk about issues and death metal is often pulls out the word "cliché", do you believe that many people underestimate this aspect merely to labelling the genre only for the impact and the malignity that it springs? What are the issues that you prefer to face and if you could organize a concert in the Vatican, what song you ironically want to dedicate to the Pope? We have a song on the album called "Suspended In Agony" about a guy getting hung up by hooks through his dick and getting shit on and tortured sexually by a dominatrix, I think that would be a good song to dedicate to the Pope. I believe death metal is really misunderstood because the best bands never got very big so therefore a lot of people don’t really know how to handle it. And a lot of metal fans like stuff to be melodic and at least in Malignant Christ’s case we are not melodic really at all. The underground scene has changed year after year, what are the characteristics that, io you opinion, distinguish who want to stay linked in a serious and coherent way to this kind of reality? This term is sometimes used as a shield-against-criticism or to raise support from people pulling against any form of music that comes out in not ultra-limited version? Malignant Christ doesn’t associate with any band that isn’t true to death or black metal. If a band is doing this to look cool then we want nothing to do with it, same with magazines or radio shows, what have you. We have asked our songs to be taken off of radio shows that we deemed to have been run by people who didn’t understand metal and had to make everything ironic and goofy and almost like a parody. I’m not saying that there shouldn’t be humor in metal because there should be but when it comes to where everything seems like a big joke then we want nothing to with it. Same for people who abuse animals, Malignant Christ is staunchly against animal abuse. Anyone who comes to certain extreme musical style and began to produce their work often ends up with the lose their own money, is usually the passion to move the row of plots that lead to the surface albums like "Forever In Chaos". Was there ever a moment when you thought you stop playing music or dedicate yourself to other things? No, never. Although for the whole of 2008 I was laying low and we didn’t do any shows at all. This was in the transition from our satanic Deicide/Vital Remains worship days to our current state. But everything that most people would consider a setback I just use as a learning experience. We at this point are self-financing meaning that I haven’t had to put money in Malignant Christ in about a year, we are profitable enough to have money to print CDs and shirts and what not. Granted, I haven’t really made a penny off of this band, but I don’t have to use my own money to get stuff printed, Malignant Christ takes care of that, which is nice. But I couldn’t see myself not doing Malignant Christ. Like I said before it allows me to function properly. Malignant Christ is a part of who I am and it’s really indistinguishable from who I am in the real world. Brandon Von and Malignant Christ are one in the same; this band is my life-force. A couple of weeks ago I had the opportunity to interview Ryan of Elders Of Apocalypse which, as stated by him, have played in your company, how do you remember that night? And how is the metal scene in Tennessee? It’s small, and Ryan is one of my best friends. I have nothing but good to say about him, Sam, and Jay from Elders and they have truly released a classic album in "The Law Of Iron". They never played a show with us but they did play a show where I attended with their other band Cannibal Rites that was very intense and they blew this really weak local Christian doom band off the stage that night. Our metal scene is really small, like I said there really isn’t much true stuff. There is Malignant Christ, Elders of the Apocalypse, Goatfucker, Your Kids on Fire, Argentinum Astrum, Domestic Assault, and a few other bands. Most of the stuff here sounds like Pantera groove garbage or Whitechapel queerness. Turning on the Internet I read that you played live with supporting a drum machine, correct? You are looking for a drummer of flesh and bones or you believe that going forward in this way it is less problematic? Oh, we’ll probably always have a drum machine. That way the drums come out exactly as I had intended them when I wrote the song. In my head I know how to play drums, my limbs simply don’t. Like I know the physics of how a blast beat is done. And that’s bullshit when people tell you that you can’t a lot with drum machines because I can do whatever my imagination wants the drums to do. When it comes down to it we were originally going to try to find a drummer but never could and over time the machines just sort of became a part of the band. Without our drum machines it wouldn’t be Malignant Christ. Politics is a pain in the ass, especially when you hear words about words, but you never see realised the promises made??. If you could form a government composed exclusively of symbol men of the extreme scene, who would you see well and in what role? I believe in survival of the fittest, be it in music or society. Let's go back to "Forever In Chaos", what are the responses obtained by the disc? As has been welcomed it by critics and listeners? Response has been a little mixed. There have been a few publications that have said we put out the best album this year which is incredibly flattering. For the most part the response has been great. The weirdest thing is when magazines don’t know how to handle us and try to compare us to like Xasthur or something because I did the album alone. Usually those reviews aren’t so good but they are few and far between. For the most part we’re enjoying a very promising run critically with this album. Fans have also eaten it up. We’re almost out of the 1st pressing and I will be repressing the album in the next two weeks. I have to do one criticism: unfortunately the drum sound penalizes the album and it is a "shame" because, in my opinion, you have made a really great work. As far as I understood you are already dialing the sequel, you think that in future there might be a possibility of a redesign, at least from that point of view, than "Forever In Chaos"? The snare is too high in the mix, that’s my fault. I recorded the album in nine days on an eight track machine but for the most part I think it came out really well. We have ideas and plans for two more albums and then we are thinking about rerecording the album. As great as some of the old bands from our area like Besieged and Enter Self were they really didn’t write a whole lot of songs and Besieged even released the same album twice. I’m not saying that to knock them because they’re a huge influence on Malignant Christ but it’s true. We want to get some new stuff out before redoing old stuff. I also plan to, if we re-record this album, to keep but records in print so fans can enjoy whichever one they like better. If you could have the opportunity to collaborate with three musicians in the drafting of the new platter, what would your ideal line-up (with you as frontman of course)? My dream lineup would be with myself, Brian Kelly of Oakmoon and Black Ritual on either bass or guitar and Adina Blase of Cernunnos on either bass or guitar. We’re a drum machine band so I can’t pick out a dream drummer because I don’t ever see us having one. Let's giving to our readers the reasons why, according to Brandon Von, they should choose to put Malignant Christ in the stereo. I’m biased so I think that aside from some flaws in the production that the album is a classic but to all of the fans who want to check it out I say that if you’re into death metal hopefully you’ll like what we’ve done. And if you’re not then you should kill yourself. Continua a leggere... INFIDEL (english version)Information Author: Mourning Translation: Dope Fiend Line Up Yiannis Poussios - Vocals Dennis Kostopoulos - Guitars Chris Kissadjekian - Bass Manos Giakoumakis - Drums In 2011 the Greek underground scene gave us the return of the doom metal band Infidel with "King Of Cynical Control" which we reviewed. Let's know them better. Hi guys and welcome on Aristocrazia Webzine, am I wrong or the doom/stoner scene is really florid in Greece in these years? Yiannis: Hello Gabriele! I’m Yiannis, the singer of the band. You’re right about Greece, but not 100%... You see, stoner rock is really popular here, and there are a lot of people going to gigs of Greek stoner bands, older or newer ones. Stoner rock has become quite a trend in my country over the last 10 years, especially among people who don’t necessarily define themselves as "metalheads". However, this is not the case with doom metal. There are not that many doom bands in Greece, and the majority of the metal fans are not really interested in this kind of music. You have been active for more than a decade, how did you start? Who are Infidel today and how did you arrive to what you are today? The idea to form a band came to me and Manos (our drummer) one night at a bar, under the influence of serious amounts of Havana Club rum. The first person we approached was Chris (our bass player) who was a long time friend of ours. The first rehearsal we ever did took place on September 2000, and for some time we had a problem finding a permanent guitar player until 2002, when we found Dennis. Since then the line-up of the band remains the same. I didn't have the pleasure of listening to your debut "I, Oathbreaker" but reading something about it and listening to "King Of Cynical Control", can we define the latter as an evolution of the first? "King Of Cynical Control" is definitely an evolution of our debut album. I mean, “I, Oathbreaker” sounds more like a standard doom/stoner record with a few different elements here and there, whereas "King Of Cynical Control" features a more complex songwriting and a more unique music style. I believe that in "King Of Cynical Control" we managed to combine our influences more effectively than we did in "I, Oathbreaker". However, if one listens to both albums, he can surely understand that they were done by the same band. Your sound is heavily inspired by Candlemass and the masters of the genre (Black Sabbath). How do you approach to this "retrò" but still relevant sound? How do you avoid the problem of sounding too much "standard"? The answer to these questions, according to my personal opinion, lies in the fact that Infidel is not an 100% doom metal band. I call our style "all things heavy", and of course there are a lot of doom influences in our music, but you can also hear some death metal, prog metal, heavy rock, in addition to some elements that have no relation to metal music whatsoever. I know that my voice reminds of Messiah Marcolin and Ozzy (I would never try to hide this fact), but on the other hand, our guitar player, Dennis, is not a doom fan. He’s more into bands like Meshuggah, Voivod, Celtic Frost, Death, Pantera, Paradise Lost etc. (he’s also a member of the Greek prog/death band Acid Death), he likes fusion and flamenco music, so even when he plays a slow, heavy doomy riff, he sounds quite different than the guitarist of a "standard" doom/stoner metal band. Generally, all members of Infidel have different music influences from one another, that’s why we don’t sound too much "standard". You built your songs basing them on the ambience and melodies. How do you write your songs? And how do you write the lyrics for them? We write all our songs during our rehearsals. One of us (it’s usually Dennis, he-heh!) may bring an idea, a certain riff or a melody, and then we start jamming based on this idea until we end up with a satisfying result. Of course, this process takes a lot of time; there are songs that took us almost 2 years to write (I mean, their final version). However, in this way the songwriting process is really enjoyable for us, and that’s the reason why we formed Infidel in the first place: to have a good time playing music! Now, about the lyrics, I write all of them since I’m the best English speaking member of the band, ha-hah! During rehearsals I find the vocal melodies that fit in with the rest of the music, together with some “strong” phrases that burst into my mind while I sing. When a song is finished in terms of music, then I try to find the words that match best with the vocal melodies and make some kind of sense at the same time. Did you made any jam session during the recordings? Is it right to say that there are parts in which we can feel very much freedom like if only instinct led you? Since our songs are the products of jamming in our rehearsals, we didn’t need to jam any more during the recordings. By the time we entered the recording studio in the summer of 2009, we had done writing all our songs and the only thing that we changed a bit was one or two guitar solos. The cover of Eurythmics' "Here Comes The Rain Again" is really unpredictable, no one expects this interesting experiment. Who had the idea? And how did you decide this song? Well, the idea for this cover was mine. When I listened to a slow, kind of trip-hop remix of that song, I thought that it would be interesting for Infidel to do a cover version and "adjust" it in doom metal terms. I believe that we did a good job, it’s quite different and longer than the original song. In your opinion, why is the doom scene still coherent and less influenced by trends like in death and black metal? I believe that this is happening because doom is a metal genre which depends more on the "right feeling" than technique. No matter how technically competent is one musician, he won’t play good doom metal if he or she can’t bring out this special "vibe", this feeling that cannot really be described with words, but makes the listener feel stunned, in awe. Maybe it’s what Al Cisneros (Sleep, Om, Shrinebuilder) described as "Iommic and Wagneric". It’s not just playing slow, delivering crushingly heavy riffs combined with melancholic melodies or a tripped-out mood... It’s not just about low-tuned guitars, power chords and vibratos, massive bass and pounding drums... or just singing about sad/dark themes, the occult or horror movies. It’s all these together, but even more it’s about loving what you do, playing from your heart and soul and not just using your mind. And when you do that, you’re less likely to be influenced by trends. Does the "pay to play" phenomenon exists in your nation too or is it just a fucking Italian habit? Well, I’m not really sure what do you mean with "pay to play"... If you mean that local bands have to pay the venue in order to play live, yes, this is often the case with Greece too. And it really sucks!!! However, due to the economic crisis, the whole thing has started to change a bit, especially with smaller venues. If 2 or 3 Greek underground bands want to put on a gig together with free entrance, then it’s not that difficult for them anymore to find a small club and play there. The owner will provide the place for free, and even pay for the backline in some cases, if he feels that there will be enough people in the gig to make him profit from the drinks and beers. However, if we’re talking about bigger, more "professional" venues with a capacity around 1000 people, then "pay to play" is the fucking rule. How did you get in touch with metal? Which are the albums, live shows and personalities of this world that changed your life? Fuck, this is a pain in the ass! I’m 42 years old and I’ve been listening to metal since I was 10, so it’s really difficult to choose. I listen to all kinds of metal except for all that power/symphonic shit which sounds like Eurovision-pop music with "heavy" guitars; this is not real metal to me. Anyway, the first album I ever bought was "Led Zeppelin IV" and it really changed my life for ever! I’m also a huge Black Sabbath fan, and their first six albums are something like the soundtrack of my life. As for live shows, the first one that I ever went to was Saxon back in 1986, and it was a mind blowing-experience! However, I still listen to a lot of music and every good band or album that I listen, changes my life a little bit for the better. Recently I listened to "Sorrow And Extinction", the first album of Pallbearer, and I was astonished. Amazing doom metal from USA! There are also two great Greek doom bands that you can check out: Universe217 & Agnes Vein. Does the economic and politic situation of your nation is influencing the organization of events and the spreading of physical releases? Will these recession times give advantage to digital music which someone better? Well, the economic crisis in Greece has surely affected music. When people don’t have enough money to support themselves and their families, they are not going to buy CDs or go to live shows; it’s a luxury they can’t afford. That’s why they download music from the internet, even though free downloading is supposed to be illegal. However this was happening to a large extent even before the economic crisis. Personally, I’m not against free downloading. For example, I prefer someone to download "King Of Cynical Control" than not to listen to it at all. On the other hand, we have reached a point where people download more music than they can actually listen to. Do we really need this? If you could send a message to the European Parliament, what would you tell to the politics which are killing our nations? I would tell them that real life is not the market economy, and people’s lives are not numerical figures. I guess they already know that, but they don’t give a shit; they only care about money. Let's talk about live shows. In the past you played together with Alabama Thunderpussy, Orange Goblin and Grand Magus, tell us your memories of these shows. Also, would you like to tell us some anecdotes of those times? We have also played with Cathedral (2 times) and Trouble. Supporting all these bands was a great honour for us, and we really had a great time doing so. Unfortunately, I don’t really have any funny stories to tell you, except from the fact that Ben Ward of Orange Goblin is a heavy drinking bastard, ha-hah! Lee Dorrian (Cathedral) is also a really cool guy, a dedicated music fan and a real gentleman, but I knew him before I started playing with Infidel... How did you support the release of "King Of Cynical Control"? Did you make a mini-tour? Will you make any other show, both in and outside Greece? Up to now we’ve played 3 live shows in Athens since the release of the album. We’re going for sure to play in some other Greek cities as well throughout the year, but outside Greece... I really don’t know. I mean, we would love to go and play live in any other country, but in order to do so someone has to invite us, right? I know for sure that it would be extremely difficult for us to do even a small European tour, because it requires expenses that we can’t really afford, but if a promoter would like to invite us for a small number of shows in a certain country, we would really think about it. I think that this is the case with any other underground band, isn’t it? How would it be your perfect live show? Headlining Roadburn Festival would be the ideal Infidel live show. I know that this is too much to ask, but dreams are for free, right? If you could organize a festival which bands would you choose? You can say splitted-up bands too. Well, take a deep breath... Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Ozzy, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Death, Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower, Entombed, Voivod, Coroner, Paradise Lost, Carcass, Soundgarden, Napalm Death, Candlemass, Cathedral, The Obsessed, My Dying Bride, Shrinebuilder, Om, Goatsnake, Neurosis, Opeth, Hooded Menace, Dodheimsgard, Mercyful Fate, Mastodon, The Mars Volta, System Of A Down, The Tea Party, Trouble, Blue Oyster Cult, Faith No More, Dillinger Escape Plan, Isis, Clutch, The Devil’s Blood, Oranssi Pazuzu, Pallbearer, Deathspell Omega (even if they don’t play live)... and Infidel of course, ha-hah!!!! This would be the ultimate festival of all times! The fest to end all fests!!! Are you already writing new stuff? Any news about a future album? Well, we are constantly writing new stuff. When we don’t have to practice for a certain live show, we enter the rehearsal room at least once a week and jam on new ideas for about 3-4 hours. This is the essence of Infidel’s existence: the joy of creation, four friends combining their needs for expression into one creative path. That’s why we always working on new ideas; we enjoy ourselves by doing so. There are no news about a third album yet, because right now we have to focus on supporting "King of Cynical Control", but you can say that we have already started working on new material and we will continue to do so, even if there’s not going to be a third album at all, ha-hah! What would you wish for your future? Just to be able to continue playing music with Infidel and record another album, sometime in the near future. That’s all. Thanks for the time spent with us, the last message for our readers is up to you. Thank you very much for this interview. If you want to check "King Of Cynical Control", you can visit our Bandcamp page: infidelgr.bandcamp.com, and there you can listen to the entire album streaming and read the lyrics as well. The Awakening 2. Godlike 3. Know Your Enemies 4. The Riot Starter Inside Everyone 5. Reborn On Fire 6. What Cures 7. Baptism 8. Oppressive Redemption 9. No One But Me 10. Etichetta: Autoprodotto Contatti: myspace.com/morgirion Autore: Mourning Tracklist 1. Prologue 2. Purification Through Fire 3. The Final Incantation 4. Ascending From Dismal Plane 5. An Ode To Fallen Cowards 6. Exiled From The Light 7. Suffer Before Me, Forsakened Hordes 8. Pyroclastic Warfare 9. An Ode To Fallen Cowards". Continua a leggere... MASSIVE ASSAULT - Death StrikeInformazioni Gruppo: Massive Assault Titolo: Death Strike Anno: 2012 Provenienza: Olanda Etichetta: F.D.A. Dismal Life 8. Aggressive Depression 9. Chained 10. LENTO - Live Recording 8.10.11Informazioni Gruppo: Lento Titolo: Live Recording 8.10.11 Anno: 2012 Provenienza: Italia Etichetta: Denovali Records Contatti: myspace.com/lento Autore: Mourning Tracklist 1. Icon 2. Earth 3. Hymen 4. Hymn 5. Still 6. Need 7. Vault 8. Hadrons 9. INFERNAL DEATH - GniewInformazioni Gruppo: Infernal Death Titolo: Gniew Anno: 2011 Provenienza: Polonia Etichetta: Autoprodotto Contatti: myspace.com/infernaldeathpl Autore: Mourning Tracklist 1. Piekielna Smierc 2. Paragraf 148 3. Gdy Przyjdzie Smierc 4. Ponura Przyszlosc 5. Nowy Lad 6. Robactwo Allacha 7. Gniew 8. Czlowiek Maszyna 9. Twarz We Mgle 10. IN TWILIGHT'S EMBRACE - Slaves To MartyrdomInformazioni Gruppo: In Twilight's Embrace Titolo: Slaves Of Martyrdom Anno: 2011 Provenienza: Polonia Etichetta: Spook Records Contatti: myspace.com/twilightkills Autore: Mourning Tracklist 1. The Atrocity Born Of Failure 2. Today's Gold 3. All Hail The Vortex 4. As The Earth Crumbled... 5. In Line They Stand 6. Wintersun 7. The Parting Hour 8. The Source 9. ...From Ruins We Emerged 10. The Pilgrim's Walk 11. Entrance 2. Stroke Of Fate 3. Decay Of Life 4. Judge Your God 5. False Messiah 6. Into The Grave 7. Asylum 8. Curse Of The Catacombs 9. Summoning Ritual 10. Axe Of Execution DURATA: 44:41 Chiamarsi Gravety e intitolare il debutto "Into The Grave"? Continua a leggere... YUCK - This One Is GoodInformazioni Gruppo: Yuck Titolo: This One Is Good Anno: 2011 Provenienza: Francia Etichetta: Postghost Recordings Contatti: myspace.com/yuckvork Autore: Mourning Tracklist 1. Legacy 2. I Will Not Close My Eyes 3. Alone In Heaven 4. Bad Luck 5. We Search For Soul 6. Nocturne 7. Gimme More 8. To Redemption DURATA: 39:01 Yuck capitolo due: "This One Is Good", la maturazione. FOLLOWING FRIDAY - Outside The FenceInformazioni ATLETA - VerdadInformazioni ARARAT - IIInformazioni lunedì 23 aprile 2012ARCANUM INFERI - Ars HermeticaInformazioni Gruppo: Arcanum Inferi Titolo: Ars Hermetica Anno: 2012 Provenienza: Italia Etichetta: Black Orgon Records Contatti: facebook.com/Arcanum.Inferi - myspace.com/arcanuminferi Autore: Akh. Tracklist 1. Praeludium 2. Aeterna Damnatio 3. Furor Melancholicus 4. Obscura Nox Ad Inferos 5. V.I.T.R.I.O.L. 6. Fructus Interdictus 7. Tabula Smaragdina 8. I.N.R.I. 9. DEAD REMAINS - Conscious CremationInformazioni Gruppo: Dead Remains Titolo: Conscious Cremation Anno: 2011 Provenienza: Germania Etichetta: Autoprodotto Contatti: myspace.com/deadremainsnb Autore: Mourning Tracklist 1. Through The Halls Of Insanity 2. Hiding Under Corpses 3. Morbid Needle Twist 4. Interitus Is Victis 5. Through Fire And Dust 6. Awoken In Flames 7. The Skinner 8. MALASANGRE - Lux Deerit SoliInformazioni Gruppo: Malasangre Titolo: Lux Deerit Soli Anno: 2012 Provenienza: Italia Etichetta: I, Voidhanger Records Contatti: myspace.com/malasangredoom Autore: Mourning Tracklist 1. Continua a leggere...
